Tip Calculator

Quickly calculate the tip and total bill, with optional split between people.

How to calculate a tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the pre-tax bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. For a 15% tip on a $50 bill, that's 50 × 0.15 = $7.50. The total you pay is the bill plus the tip: $57.50. Our calculator does this instantly and can also split the total between any number of people.

How much should I tip?

  • Restaurants (sit-down): 15–20% in the US is standard, 18–22% for excellent service.
  • Delivery / takeout: 10–15%, with a $2–5 minimum.
  • Bartenders: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab.
  • Taxi / ride-share: 10–15% of the fare.
  • Hairdresser / barber: 15–20%.

Tipping norms vary by country — in many parts of Europe and Asia, service is often included or tipping is minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax is not money the server is providing service for. However, many people simply tip on the total for convenience.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's subtotal first, multiply by (1 + tip%) to get their share including tip, then add their portion of the tax.

Is a 20% tip considered generous?

20% is standard-to-good in the US for sit-down dining. 22%+ signals excellent service. Below 15% generally signals dissatisfaction.
